Magic: The Gathering

I played Magic in the early 90s with my brother mostly. IIRC we had fun! I played a little in college (shout out to Travis and Paul) and that was fun too, but quickly fell away from it as other collegiate interests developed (depression, Cs on exams, intramural floor hockey, and insecurity!)

So this weekend I joined the crew and jumped into the game. I was really hoping to have a great time. I mean, Great Time grat time. And it wasn't. It was annoying to try and play against decks that were constructed over the course of how-long with +1 to everything with each mana tapped, for example. Pfft. It could have been fun, but it kind of wasn't and that bummed me out.

I know exactly how this sounds; someone complaining about MAGIC: THE GATHERING. God. For now I'll head back to reading Lord of the Rings and give it another shot next time.

Elderly sign up for Wii

This warms my heart, and I hope a researcher somewhere does a little study on the effects of video game playing on fitness, mood, cognitive ability, and alertness: DailyTech - Wii Invades Retirement Home.

Everyone, please go the f*ck away

I have precious few things in my life that could be considered leisurely.  This is also the first time in almost three years that I've had any leisure time at all to speak of.  I guard it with precious ferocity, schedule it along with homework sessions and my drive to Worcester, and plan on doing karate even when everything else seems to be going to pot (mostly because I am tired of living, breathing, and sleeping speech-language pathology.)  So the precious two hours a week I put aside for the karate classes at the UMass gym are jealously guarded.

I pay lots of money in fees to this univeristy, fees that I can't get waived or get financial aid to think about because well they're FEES not TUITION, to have access to some of the clubs on campus.  Mind you, I've had NO TIME during my tenure here up until this semester to even take advantage of them, and so I feel an extra sort of snootiness about it: UMass has made alot of money off my student activities fee that I never used for three semesters (and I don't even know what the money goes towards.  Grad students still have to PAY to get into sporting events. Wha??)  And with an indignant huff I feel entitled.

When I come home from a long day in Worcester where I pay for the privledge to work in a hospital, or a long day working in the lab then sitting through classes, I want to be able to drive to the gym on the other side of campus, park, and take the fucking karate class.  End of story.  And when I have to spend 15 minutes driving circles through campus trying to find parking I tend to get a little testy.

Usually parking isn't a problem, that is, until there's a basketball game.  Or a hockey game.  And when there's a sporting event going on, a sporting event taking place at a Division I school, everyone turns out.  Freshman, seniors, alumni, and the general public, and it drives me batshit.  Absolute batshit.  I spit at the sight of Lexii SUVs driving around the parking lots with a 60-something couple squinting at the last spot in the lot.  I fume at the tailgaters (!) chugging beer as they make their way to the gym.  I think horrible obscene thoughts as I see them, these visitors, taking away any and all hope of getting any parking anywhere within a half-mile radius of my stupid, little karate class; one of the few things that is keeping me sane until I graduate.

All of you, all of you people taking away parking from those of us who pay to go to this university to study something: go away.  I pay for this goddammed campus and I want to use it.

Sometimes You Just Need a Shot to the Head in de_dust

Csdead

So today was my last day at my practicum at the preschool. I am already stressed by school next week and I wasn't feeling well and was in an overall blah mood. Even though it was sunny and even though I got one of the warmest send-offs a student could hope for. But it was a downer to know that this was the end of this placement and that the end of my three year educational trip is just about done. Somehow that whole idea freaked me out; what I've worked so hard for is just within reach and something that seemed like such a pipe dream all of a sudden is HERE, like, HI, I'm you're future moving in, mind if I rifle through the fridge, because you and me? We're in it for the long haul. (provided I pass my boards.)

So with a blue heart I fiddled around online for a bit, feeling all morose that little kids won't be wiping boggers on me and I got a random ping from James T. on chat and it completely brightened my day. Just carousing about Counter Strike (and why I can't play right now [no machine that runs it]), talking about a recent ski trip, and the other randoms of life. It was a nice change. And he's convinced me to get online next week and be target practice for the gang. Thanks James T.! See you next week, Remo.

A Wii bit goes a long way.

Some guy decided to play the Wii and track his weight, BMI, heart rate and other such stats to see if playing the Wii could impact your health. The answer is yes, the Wii can help you get in shape!

*insert gobbeldygook here*

Tigerpinball I received an early Christmas present that was a) a complete surprise and b) knocked my socks off. I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am to have received a Nintendo DS Lite! I think my first handheld was a Tiger Pinball game I received as a stocking stuffer somewhere in the mid 80s. I played that thing through countless AA batteries and numerous car trips to NYC to visit extended family. I can still feel the buttons under my thumbs and see the ball and it's intended trajectory, timing the flipper flip just so to make the ball obey my every command. Ah, nostalgia.

Then in the later 80s to early 90s the Nintendo Gameboy is where I first met Tetris (Google video link to a one hour BBC special on the creation of Tetris). I didn't own one, but the folks I used to babysit for did. Many a late night babysitting at the Wickes' house I would curl up on their couch, a slave to Mr. Pajitnov's genius, in their 1800s farmhouse and play Tetris on the tiny black and white screen while waiting for them to come home. The music is tattooed on my brain I cannot resist a game of Tetris for a few hours or so.

So it was particularly poignant that the first game I received with the DS Lite was the Metroid Pinball game. And the second? I think it'll be Tetris.
