Matt Haughey describes a new practice at Petco in a post about donating spare change to the Humane Society. I too think this is a great cause and a worthy endeavor but let's not play down how much that change might add up to over the course of a year.
In preparation for our move the Hubby and I collected all our spare change from over the years and went to one of those automated change counter thingies to see what we had. My guess was about $30, Piggy guessed $20. It covered the bottom of a boot shoebox to a depth of maybe three coins.
When it was all said and done, here's what we had in random spare change from over the last year. Keep in mind that I use change and will rifle through change stashes to find quarters for my caffeine and scone habit.
The Totals:
367 Quarters
664 Dimes
411 Nickles
1372 Pennies
SubTotal: $192.42
Fee: $17.13*
Net. $175.29
$192! That's quite a bit of change. Continually donated to places like the Humane Society that change can do alot of good. (there's a pun in here somewhere, but I'm too tired to think of it.)
*I think the 8% fee is way too high for something like this but there was enough change and not enough time to warrant using an automatic change counter.
