Life Imitates Art?

The first time I'd ever heard of the Albuquerque Isotopes was in the Simpson's Hungry Hungry Homer episode when Homer finds out Duff is trying to sell the team to Albuquerque. A friend pointed me to this article about a couple who visited all major and minor league baseball parks, and lo and behold, the Albuquerque Isotopes were on their list.

!!!

A quick search confirms that the Simpson's episode aired March 04 2001, the team was sold to Albuquerque from Calgary in May of 2001 with the deal beginning in January of that year. Another quick search on snpp.com (bless those folks) confirms that there was an article on 06/01/01 by a local affiliate in Albuquerque about the merchandisers pushing the name (unfortunately the article is no longer on their site.)

Since the Simpsons had been using the Springfield Isotopes team name for a long while one would assume that the Simpsons gave the team buyers the idea for the name, but there's the tricky question of the timing of the Hungry Hungry Homer episode and the pending approval of the team's move to Albuquerque. Could it be possible that the buyers of the team and FOX sat down and agreed to do an episode about the possibility of moving the team to Albuquerque (even though eventually they stayed in Springfield, whereas the real team moved?) Conspiracy theorists, do your stuff!

BTW confidential to Rozzie: you could do SUCH a cool logo for these guys. What they have now is kind of lame.

Electronic Camp

This coming weekend the swine and I have (foolishly?) decided to take our very first camping trip. Aside from a very few camping trips where all the details were organized by somebody else (hat tip to Julie!) I have very little knowledge of camping. So far our gear consists of a tent, two sleeping bags, and a flashlight.

I'm one of those people who asks alot of questions and does alot of research when learning about something new. Thanks to the wonderful world wide web I can find a primer for car camping, checklist of things to pack when car camping, beginners info on backpacking, and what is considered good etiquette for fornication in the great outdoors.

Some days I curse you internet, but today I kiss you.

Announcing Bread & Coffee.

Some of you might remember a few food related posts I put here with the subtitle "Bread & Coffee". I've decided to take those posts and spin them off into their own blog, you know, kind of like Joanie Loves Chachi. So now you can see what I've been wasting my time on rather than posting here.

Bread & Coffee

This weekly features blog will concentrate on the narratvies and reviews of recipes, gadgets, or restaurants with guest writers and illustrators on occasion.

So please go check it out, sign up for the mailing list or leave a comment. I'd love to hear what you have to say. And if this new blog gives one person a new idea for dinner or the penchant to try something new and daring, well then I'd say the blog is a success.

And you know, as a peace offering for the complete lack of updates here, go be voyeristic or something and enjoy photos of my cats. And snake. And husband.

Mr. Hussein, your slice of humble pie is up.

You'd think for a guy who spent months hiding in holes in the ground that he'd be aware of this thing we like to call REALITY. But you know, if you can keep lying to yourself then maybe the Fairy Godmother will make it real!

Bush the "real enemy"? As compared to YOU? Give me a break.

Biscuts

I love biscuts. Particularly buttermilk biscuts. With jam. Or fresh berries and cream. Or just plain. I'll eat a whole batch if given the opportunity. Which is kind of strange because I don't come from biscut country, but rather Johnny Cake country.

This biscut recipe from Cooks Illustrated (by way of the Amateur Gourmet) looks absolutely spectactular. I won't have the chance to try them out for a little while, but you, YOU dear reader, should make a batch for brunch this weekend and let me know how they are.
